Washington, D.C. is the capital city of the United States of America. "D.C." stands for the District of Columbia, the federal district containing the city of Washington. The city is named after George Washington, military leader of the American Revolution and the first President of the United States.
The District of Columbia and the city of Washington are coextensive and are governed by a single municipal government, so for most practical purposes they are considered to be the same entity (this was not always the case, though, as there were multiple jurisdictions within the district as late as 1871, when Georgetown ceased to be a separate city within the District). However, although there is a municipal government and a mayor, Congress has the supreme authority. (Information provided by Wikipedia .)

(Washington, DC) – Mayor Adrian M. Fenty today named Valerie Santos as his Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development.
“We’ve got more than $13 billion worth of development in the District’s development pipeline and we need to ensure that during these tough economic times we do everything we can to keep that investment flowing so that we can keep building great neighborhoods, a vibrant downtown and world-class waterfronts as well as continue to keep providing new affordable housing and job opportunities,” Mayor Fenty said. “In Ms. Santos, we not only have a steady hand who knows the job, we have someone who is a consummate professional who will bring private-sector talent to get the job done.”
Santos is replacing Neil O. Albert, who was promoted to City Administrator in late May. Previously, Santos served as Albert’s chief operating officer where she oversaw the day-to-day execution of Mayor Fenty’s economic development strategy, including coordinating its public-private development, affordable housing, business attraction and retention, and neighborhood revitalization initiatives.
The office is charged with bringing federal, nonprofit and private and community partners together to expand the District's tax bases, attract and retain businesses of all sizes, bring good-paying jobs for residents and strengthen business climate. Projects within the office’s portfolio include the $2 billion Southwest Waterfront redevelopment, the $1 |

WASHINGTON, DC – The District’s creative industries generate more than $5 billion worth of income each year, according to an assessment recently conducted by the DC Office of Planning and Washington DC Economic Partnership.
“The economic significance of the creative sector is clear – creative enterprises play a key role in contributing to the District’s economic vibrancy through tourism, income generation, and business incubation,” said Harriet Tregoning, Director of the Office of Planning. “Now, more than ever, we have an opportunity to harness the extensive talent in the city in a way that will position the District as a global leader in creative industries.”
Today, there are more than 75,000 direct jobs in the District’s creative sector, which amount to more than 10 percent of the city’s employment base. The District’s creative base includes building arts, design, media, communications, performing/visual arts, museum management, and culinary arts. Most of the District’s creative jobs are in commercial enterprises focused on a subset of the creative economy which includes media, culinary arts, museum management and design.
